Faith in Action Pillars — The Four Program Tracks Explained

What Faith in Action actually is

In August 2018, Supreme restructured the entire service program around four pillars: Faith, Family, Community, Life. Before that, programs were loosely organized under labels like Church Director, Culture of Life Director, Family Director, Community Director — similar pillars in spirit but without the unified branding.

Faith in Action is the current framework for every council program, every Columbian Award credit, every SP-7 submission. If you're a pillar director, a Program Director, or a Grand Knight, this is the structure you're operating inside.

Here's what each pillar actually covers, what the signature programs are, and how credit works.

The four pillars

Faith

What it covers: Spiritual programs — prayer, sacraments, parish liturgical support, faith formation.

Faith in Action programs (Supreme-recognized) — 2025–26 list per the Fraternal Excellence Guide:

• RSVP (Refund Support Vocations Program) — supports seminarians and religious-order postulants in your diocese. Featured Program — 2 credits.
• Into the Breach — men's spiritual formation series based on the Bishop Olmsted apostolic exhortation. Featured Program — 2 credits.
• Spiritual Reflection Program — facilitated parish retreats. Featured Program — 2 credits.
• Holy Hour — Eucharistic adoration hosted by the council. Featured Program — 2 credits.
• Pilgrim Icon Program — rotating icon hosted across councils for veneration. (1 credit.)
• Building the Domestic Church Kiosk — parish resource on Catholic home life. (1 credit.)
• Rosary Program — parish-wide rosaries, especially during Marian months. (1 credit.)
• Sacramental Gifts — gifts to members/parishioners receiving sacraments. (1 credit.)

What the Faith Director runs: Coordinates with the Chaplain, works closely with the parish priest, schedules spiritual programs, reports credits to the Program Director.

Common Faith programs that aren't in the official list but count for credit: parish Adoration hours, Marian processions, RCIA support, men's prayer breakfasts, Lenten reflections. If it's faith-formation work sponsored by your council, it generally counts.

Family

What it covers: Programs that strengthen marriage, parenting, and household faith life.

Faith in Action programs (Supreme-recognized) — 2025–26 list per the Fraternal Excellence Guide:

• Food for Families — council-supported food donations coordinated with parish food pantries. Featured Program — 2 credits.
• Family of the Month / Family of the Year — recognition program. Featured Program — 2 credits.
• Family Fully Alive — monthly family prayer and reflection resource. Featured Program — 2 credits.
• Family Prayer Night — council-hosted family prayer event. Featured Program — 2 credits.
• Keep Christ in Christmas — Advent-season campaign (cards, posters, essay contest). (1 credit.)
• Family Week — weeklong parish-level family celebration. (1 credit.)
• Consecration to the Holy Family — family-level devotional program. (1 credit.)
• Good Friday Family Promotion — family-observance of the Passion. (1 credit.)

What the Family Director runs: Often paired with a Chair Couple (husband-and-wife team who lead family-facing programs). Coordinates with the parish family ministry if one exists.

Common Family programs that count: family retreats, father-son/mother-daughter events, council family picnics, couple-prep classes, adoption support programs.

Community

What it covers: Outward-facing service to the parish and broader community.

Faith in Action programs (Supreme-recognized) — 2025–26 list per the Fraternal Excellence Guide:

• Coats for Kids — winter coat distribution. Featured Program — 2 credits.
• Global Wheelchair Mission — wheelchair donations to developing nations. Featured Program — 2 credits.
• Habitat for Humanity — housing support. Featured Program — 2 credits.
• Disaster Preparedness — council readiness + local disaster response. (1 credit.)
• Free Throw Championship — youth basketball skills event. (1 credit.)
• Catholic Citizenship Essay Contest — school-age essay competition. (1 credit.)
• Soccer / Hockey Challenge — youth sports skills events. (1 credit.)
• Helping Hands — council-organized volunteer service projects. (1 credit.)

What the Community Director runs: The most externally visible pillar. Works with parish outreach committees, local charities, and civic partners.

Common Community programs that count: food drives, blood drives, community clean-up events, veterans' support, homeless outreach, parish festival staffing.

Life

What it covers: Pro-life programs across the life spectrum — prenatal, elderly, end-of-life.

Faith in Action programs (Supreme-recognized) — 2025–26 list per the Fraternal Excellence Guide:

• March for Life — council delegations to the national March in January and state marches. Featured Program — 2 credits.
• Special Olympics — long-running Order-wide support. Featured Program — 2 credits.
• Ultrasound Initiative — Supreme matches council fundraising for ultrasound machines donated to pregnancy resource centers. Featured Program — 2 credits.
• ASAP / Pregnancy Center Support — Aid and Support After Pregnancy and related pro-life care. Featured Program — 2 credits.
• Silver Rose — 5-month Marian pilgrimage honoring Our Lady of Guadalupe and advocating for life. (1 credit.)
• Christian Refugee Relief — support for persecuted Christian communities. (1 credit.)
• Mass for People with Special Needs — inclusive parish liturgy. (1 credit.)
• Novena for Life — 9-day prayer program. (1 credit.)

What the Life Director runs: Coordinates with local pregnancy resource centers, diocesan pro-life offices, and March for Life organizers. This pillar is often the hardest to staff and the one councils are most likely to miss credits on.

Common Life programs that count: Rosary for Life, parish pro-life speakers, support for widowed members, bereavement ministry, hospice support, visits to homebound elderly.

How credit works

For the Columbian Award (SP-7)

• Each qualifying program earns credits. Featured Programs that meet minimum requirements earn 2 credits; all other qualifying programs earn 1 credit per occurrence.
• Minimum: 4 credits per pillar, every pillar (no zeros allowed). Most councils clear the bar with a mix of Featured and non-Featured events.
• You report credits on Form SP-7, the Columbian Award application, due June 30.
• The Program Director signs SP-7. The Grand Knight co-signs.

Balance matters

A council with 20 Community credits and 0 Life credits doesn't win Columbian — the 4-per-pillar floor forces coverage across all four. This is the single most common reason councils miss Columbian: strong in two pillars, thin in one or two others.

Mid-year audit

Count your credits in January. If you're at 2 Faith, 5 Family, 3 Community, 1 Life, you know exactly where to schedule catch-up events for the second half.

Changes from the pre-2018 program structure

If you have old council documents or an experienced FS who references old labels, here's the rough mapping:

Use current Faith in Action terminology (Faith / Family / Community / Life Director) on everything you file now.

How this connects to the rest of your council

• Form #365 names your pillar directors. Without #365 on file, SP-7 credits don't count. See Form #365.
• SP-7 submits the year's credits. Due June 30. Required for the Columbian Award leg of Star Council.

Practical advice if you're starting a pillar from scratch

• Plan one event per pillar per quarter minimum. 4 events × 4 pillars × 1 credit each = 16 credits. That's the Columbian target, met exactly. Build any surplus on top.
• Piggyback on parish programs. If your parish runs a monthly Adoration hour, your council can co-sponsor and claim a Faith credit. Same for parish food drives (Community) or pro-life events (Life).
• Document as you go. A credit you "should have" counted in October but didn't log is harder to claim on SP-7 in June.
• Pick flagship programs for each pillar. Coats for Kids in Community, Silver Rose in Life, Rosary Program in Faith, Family Fully Alive in Family — running these consistently year after year builds council identity and simplifies planning.
